Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots
by Deborah Feldman
Read the book that inspired the currently streaming Netflix series. A young girl, deemed to be an orphan after her mother leaves her with her disabled father, Deborah navigates growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York speaking only Yiddish with an education guiding her towards her prescribed role as a wife and mother. Her Bubby and Zeidi think she is foolish to strive for more, but she cannot help to wonder about the secular lives people live outside of her community. Wonderful, intriguing and heartbreaking, a must read! The show and book are different (although they follow similar paths) so it is worthwhile to check out both!
